The adequate definition of technical policies is critical to well operate a telecommunications infrastructure. These policies are what define the standards adopted and guarantee the uniformity of the infrastructure, minimizing costs and facilitating maintenance and management.

For large organizations, standardization is critical. In large organizations, it is common to see large teams working independently throughout the world, negotiating, buying and operating parts of an infrastructure. Sometimes standards, are the only glue that keeps the infrastructure together.

Some examples of technical policies:

• Use of faxes always linked in PBXs extensions (Not directly to external trunks);
• Voice and data integration for sites whose traffic exceeds x volume;
• Outsource or not some types of services;
• Use of IP PBXs or conventional ones;
• Billing by personal code;
• Standards to trunks dimensioning;
• Use of a given technology (MPLS for example).
